Kuna Caves

There's not a whole lot to do in Idaho. Boise, Idaho is the most populous city in the state. It actually feels like any other normal big city.

But once you get out of that city and its surrounding suburbs, there's really not a whole lot going on.

My brother and his wife lived in Boise for a year. I visited them at their place a few times.

On one of those occasions, we were looking for something to do. My brother and sister-in-law had essentially exhausted all of the other entertainment options and were looking for another adventure.

My brother had wanted to explore the nearby Kuna Caves for some time but hadn't gotten around to it.

So, we jumped into the car and set out on the drive.

Kuna is a pretty small town that's only 15-20 minutes away from Boise. But once you get there, you quickly begin to feel like you're in the middle of nowhere.

We had the location in our GPS, and honestly, we would not have found the caves if we didn't follow it to the T.

The Kuna Caves entrance site is, essentially, in the middle of a cow field.

There's an open dirt area where cars can park. From there, you can see the top of a metal ladder sticking up out of the ground. That's it.

There was a couple that was just leaving when we got there - otherwise, the place was deserted.

You have to slowly descend the ladder one at a time, since it seemed pretty unstable.

Once on the ground in the cave, there's actually a lot of light coming from above.

You can choose to go either North or South into various sections of the cave. We went North first. It didn't go very far and quickly ended.

So, we turned around to explore the South side caves. These were much more elaborate. At some points, it required that we got on our hands and knees to get through some very tight spaces.

It also gets pretty dark pretty quickly. So, make sure you have a flashlight. Or at least enough battery in your cell phone to get through, which is what we used.

Eventually, you'll get to a place where you won't be able to get through, so you'll have to turn around.

All throughout, there's artistic graffiti, fire pits and trash. You can tell that it's a popular site among local teenagers.

It makes for an exciting afternoon, as long as you don't mind getting a little bit dirty.
