Lake Lucerne
Let me start this post off by saying that Switzerland is perhaps my favorite country to visit in all of Europe. That fact comes because of my stay in Lucerne.
What you have to know about Lucerne is that it isn't a very big town. It's more of a tourist town than anything. But central to the town is Lake Lucerne.
It's the focal point of the entire city. All of the roads lead down to it. It's by the train station. The main shops and restaurants are right next to it.
Lake Lucerne is what gives the city so much of its charm.
When I initially arrived by train to Lucerne with my group of friends, we got off at the station and immediately saw the lake and city surrounded by the mountains. I knew I was going to like this place.
It was getting late when we arrived, so we checked in and set out to find some food. I went out on my own to look for a place, but before I went anywhere else I wandered down to the lake to take some pictures of the sunset.
Two days later (we spent a day hiking the Alps in between) the very first thing I did was go back over to the lake. There was a game of soccer going on right by the lake that I jumped into.
I wandered to the other side of the city and sat with locals dipping their feet in the water.
I watched the geese and swans swim around in the water.
It's about as serene a lake as you could possibly find. It's one of my favorite lakes - perhaps not because it's that great of a lake in and of itself - but because of how it brings people and the town together.
