Girona, Spain
Since I speak Spanish fluently, I've always wanted to visit Spain. I learned my Spanish in Argentina, so I knew that the Spanish spoken in Spain would be a little different. I wasn't very concerned about that, though.
I didn't make it to Spain the first time I went Europe. But the second time I went - it was the first place on my to-see list.
Now, to get to Girona, Spain. Why would I pick a random city most people outside of Spain/Europe have never even heard of? That's a great question.
The answer lies in with Ryanair and the infamous budget airlines of Europe. I'll save a post entirely on that for later this month.
Just know that we (I was with some family members) were planning on going to Barcelona to see the famous Sagrada Familia. However, since we were flying with Ryanair, their planes don't go to the Barcelona airport. They go to the smaller Girona airport.
So, we planned for this and planned to take a the hour and a half train ride into Barcelona after a few days in Girona.
I was overwhelmed with how incredible Girona was. I am so glad that we made the decision to stop in this quaint little town.
The first thing I noticed when we got there was how clean the city was. The city itself was planned out very well. The streets are very easy to navigate and there's something new to see at every turn. I mean, just look at the above picture! It was taken very close to where we were spending the night.
Once we found the place we were staying at, we set out to explore.
We headed over to the famous Girona Cathedral. We also made our way around the Passeig de la Muralla (this was my favorite part of the day). It's a towering wall that goes around most of the city. It gives you extraordinary viewpoints all the way around.
The city was a dream. We stayed just two days before heading over to Barcelona, but I loved every minute of this lovely town. For those who have been to Switzerland, that's the closest comparison that I have to what it felt like. No, it didn't have the Alps surrounding it, but the people and environment it created felt as cosy as my trip to Lucerne, Switzerland.
If you ever take a budget flight here on your way to Barcelona - don't skip over spending some time in this perfect little town on your way.
