Bonneville Salt Flats

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Con Air. Independence Day.

What do all of these movies have in common?

The Bonneville Salt Flats.

Yes, that's right. The Bonneville Salt Flats, located close to the border of Utah and Nevada, is world famous. So, living so close, I decided to take a trip there one free afternoon to see what all the hubbub was about.

Getting there
The drive there is painfully boring. The scenery is rather dull and never-ending. It's about a 90-minute drive from Salt Lake City is all, however.

When you type the location into the GPS, it takes you to the Bonneville Salt Flats rest stop. My mind was fooled though. For several miles leading up to that GPS stop, the Salt Flats are there. To your left and your right. You can step out and take pictures anywhere, really.

The main difference as to where the GPS took me was that there was water in that part. A bonafide salt lake. Not that Salt Lake, but a salty lake nonetheless.

Being there
It was full of tourists stopping by to take strange pictures.

The flats are covered in water where I went, but it doesn't get deep. You can go out as far as the eye can see to get pictures in the lake...er...salt flats.

Veteran tip: If you get your feet or other parts of your body covered in salt, don't use the restrooms to rinse off. You'll like like a fool. As my friend did. To the left of everyone is a 'Foot Rinsing' area. Designed for said use. You can thank me later.
